Del Oro High School

Del Oro had a weekend to remember at the Drew Esquivel Memorial Duals Wrestling Tournament in Healdsburg, taking first-place with a 5-0 record on the weekend. The Golden Eagles were dominant in the first four rounds, defeating El Cerrito (82-0), Santa Rosa-Elsie Allen (64-6), Stockton- St. Mary’s (58-15), and Franklin (66-12) to set up a championship matchup with Vista del Lago. Del Oro won five of the final eight matches in the championship to take the dual 60-19.

Nine different Golden Eagle wrestlers went unbeaten on the weekend, including a 5-0 performance from freshman Evan Hilman.

Del Oro also opened Sierra Foothill League play on Dec. 14 at Oak Ridge, which it won 54-21.

Oakmont High School

Oakmont’s Tanner Stone finished eighth at the Zinkin Classic over the weekend at Buchanan High School in Clovis. Stone was narrowly edged by Dominic Marquez of Paso Robles, who won 10-8. Stone’s win is impressive for the Vikings, as the Zinkin Classic is considered one of the toughest tournaments in the state.

Granite Bay High School

Granite Bay had its own impressive performance at the Zinkin Classic, as Levi Bussey took seventh in the 186-pound weight class. Bussey pinned Turlock’s Elijah Watson in three minutes, 51 seconds.

The Granite Bay girls had an impressive performance over the weekend as well with two girls finishing top six at the West Coast Tournament of Champions at @ The Grounds in Roseville. Taylor Wells took sixth-place in the 106-pound division, while Malia Niimi took fourth in 116.

Woodcreek High School

The Woodcreek Timberwolves didn’t have to travel far Saturday, as they competed in the Marty Manges Tournament at Casa Roble High School. As a team, the Timberwolves finished ninth out of 15 schools with 89 points.

Hakeem Anderson was the man of the hour for Woodcreek, finishing as the runner-up in the 220-pound division.

Daniel Aguilar had a strong tournament as well, taking third-place in the 120 division behind Nicholas Bulanin of Elk Grove and Union Mine’s Charles Sadek. Aguilar’s brother, Devin, wasn’t too shabby himself, taking fourth at 126. Dylan Perrault finished fifth at 138.

West Park High School

Kaden Obien won the 132-pound division at the Marty Manges Tournament, pinning El Dorado’s Gavin Coit in three minutes, 30 seconds. Obien, a junior at West Park, has been solid for the Panthers with a 9-1 record on the season.

“Kaden has put in years of wrestling and when starting a new program, it’s great to have someone who has expectations of making state and wanting to wrestle in college,” Panthers coach Bret Friend said. “We are a young team and all of these kids are first- and second-year wrestlers but Kaden is a great leader to show guys how he prepares, practices and competes. He was probably the only guy who went out there and was physical right of... Click here to read full article
