DEL ORO TAKES 1ST AT SIERRA NEVADA CLASSIC

Del Oro takes 1st at Sierra Nevada Classic

Del Oro Varsity Wrestling returned to the Sierra Nevada Classic for the first time since 2019 and took first place out of 79 teams. The Sierra Nevada was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID and in 2021 due to adverse weather conditions. In 2019 Del Oro took 2nd place to Rancho Bernardo HS (San Diego, CA) by a half point (212.0 to 211.5) but this year the team was able win the tournament for the first time since 2016. Since 2013 Del Oro and Rancho Bernardo have combined for six first place team finishes (3 Del Oro, 3 Rancho Bernardo) three runner up (2 Del Oro and 1 Rancho Bernardo), and three 3rd place (2 Del Oro and 1 Rancho Bernardo. This year Mountain View HS (Bend, OR, 6th in Oregon DIV 6A) was 2nd and Spanish Springs HS (Spanish Springs, NV, 2nd in Nevada DIV 5A) was 4th.

Kam Rush, Logan Banks, and Chino Igarashi all advanced to the round of 12 but were eliminated one match short of placing.

Next up for Del Oro is a league match versus Whitney HS at Del Oro on Wednesday, JAN 4. After that one varsity team will head south to the Doc Buchanan Tournament (Clovis, CA) while another varsity team will head north to the Joe Rios Tournament (Chico, CA).
