Bakersfield, CA- Del Oro took six wrestlers to the California HS State Tournament at Mechanics Bank Arena and finished with two individual medalists and 17th place overall. The California State Tournament is the largest state tournament in the nation with only one division for all participating schools. Del Oro was the 2nd highest placing team from the Sac-Joaquin Section (behind Oakdale) and has now had a state placer 24 of the last 28 years. Leading the way this year were 108 lb Siraj Sidhu and 128 lb Issac Herrera. Sidhu entered the tournament as the #5 seed and advanced to the quarterfinals where he dropped a tight 8-5 decision to Paulo Valdez (Hesperia HS). Sidhu rebounded quickly and beat SJS rivals Elijah Valencia (Merced HS) and Zach Hoover (Laguna Creek HS) before losing to Abram Cline (Granite Hills HS) in the conso semifinals. This set up a rematch with Hernandez in the 5th place match but this time Sidhu finished on top with the 5-3 win and a 5th place medal. Issac Herrera won his first match but lost In the round of 16 to Aiden Simmons (Bakersfield HS) 5-1. Herrera defeated Jesse Meza (Oakdale HS) and then avenged a January loss to Josh Requena (Camarillo HS) 4-2 on a last second takedown. In the blood round Herrera faced Ryan Lobato (Lakeside HS) who had beated the previously mentioned Requena 9-3 at the Southern Section Masters Tournament. Herrera beat Lobato 7-2 to secure a medal. Herrera lost to Bryce Luna (St. Francis HS) and then faced Haden Hernandez (Marina HS) in the 7th place match. Hernandez had eliminated Herrera at the 2022 State Tournament but Herrera won 5-3 this time around to place 7th.
Kainoa Acia and Jagger French both went 2-2 to finish in the Top 12 and Top 16, respectively. Logan Banks and Chino Igarashi went 0-2.
